Lotus Emira Woodcote Silverstone

There is a particular feeling that comes with sitting in a Lotus for the first time - the driving position is low, the wheel is close, and everything around you signals that this car was built for one purpose. The Lotus Emira sharpens that feeling and wraps it in something Lotus has rarely offered before: a genuinely refined interior, a modern infotainment system, and two very different engine options that require some thought before you book your appointment.

This guide is written by our team at Woodcote & Copse - Lotus specialists based at Silverstone - to help you arrive at your test drive informed, with the right questions ready and a clear sense of which Emira configuration is worth your time behind the wheel.

What Is the Lotus Emira?

The Lotus Emira is the brand's final petrol-powered sports car - a deliberate full stop on more than seven decades of lightweight, driver-focused ICE engineering before Lotus transitions to an all-electric lineup. Unveiled in 2021 and now in full UK production, it sits in the mid-engine two-seat segment alongside cars like the Porsche 718 Cayman and Alpine A110, though its character is distinctly its own.

It is built on an all-new bonded aluminium platform - not a carry-over from the Elise or Exige - delivering a more rigid structure while accommodating a far more liveable interior than any previous Lotus road car.

Two Engines, Two Very Different Characters

This is the most important decision to understand before your test drive, and it is worth getting right.

The V6 Supercharged - the driver's engine

The 3.5-litre supercharged V6 is Toyota-sourced and the engine Lotus engineers know most intimately - the same much-loved V6 from the Exige and Evora, further developed within the Emira's lighter, stiffer structure. It is available with either a manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic with paddle shift

What the numbers do not convey is the character. The supercharger builds pressure immediately with no lag, and a linear power delivery that rewards precision on corner exit. In manual form, the gearchange is mechanical and deliberate - this is not a car that flatters hesitation. If your primary motivation is analogue engagement, this is the engine to experience first, and it is the one we would recommend requesting for your test drive if driver involvement is your benchmark.

The AMG Four-Cylinder - the modern alternative

Developed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG, the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is paired exclusively with an 8-speed dual-clutch (DCT) automatic gearbox, but in character the delivery is broader and more progressive through the mid-range than the V6, with Sport and Track modes sharpening throttle response and gearshift speed via the steering wheel paddles.

This engine will likely suit drivers who have come from performance saloons or grand tourers, are comfortable with automatic transmissions, and want an Emira they can use more easily in everyday traffic. It also offers strong in-gear pull at motorway speeds. For those primarily focused on touring use with weekend performance driving, it is a worthy alternative.

Our recommendation: if possible, drive both.

Lotus Emira Interior

What to Expect When You Sit Inside

The interior is the area that surprises most Lotus customers, particularly those with prior experience of the Elise or Exige. The Emira's cabin is genuinely well-appointed - materials and switchgear quality are closer to a GT car than a track-focused sports car, representing a significant step forward for the brand.

A few practical notes to factor into your visit:

  • Ingress and egress requires more physical flexibility than a conventional car. The door aperture is wide, but the sill is high and the seat is low. If this is a consideration - for passengers, for daily commuting, or for individual mobility - mention it to us when booking so we can walk you through it before the drive itself.
  • Infotainment is a bespoke Lotus system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto supported. .
  • Luggage space is provided by the rear boot (151 litres) and a further storage area behind the seats (208 litres). Sufficient for a weekend bag, but set expectations accordingly if travelling with a passenger and luggage.
  • Visibility rearward is restricted, as with most mid-engine cars of this type. Parking sensors are standard. A reversing camera was standard on First Edition models; on later cars it is available as an optional extra

What to Focus on During the Drive

A test drive in any performance car is a short window. These are the areas worth focusing on specifically for the Emira:

  • Steering weight and feedback. Lotus has always built cars around steering feel, and the Emira is no different. At speed, notice how the wheel communicates surface texture and load - this is one of the clearest differentiators between the Emira and more mass-market sports cars in the same price bracket.
  • Ride quality over varied surfaces. The Emira's suspension is firm but not punishing. On the typical UK road mix - smooth dual carriageway, urban surfaces, and occasional poor tarmac - note whether the vertical movement feels controlled or intrusive. In Comfort mode the car is liveable; in Sport and Track, it tightens considerably. It is also worth noting that the Emira is available with Touring and Sport suspension options. While the Sport specification delivers a firmer character, the difference between the two setups is not dramatic - if demonstrator availability allows, experiencing both back to back is worthwhile before making a decision.
  • Engine note and supercharger whine (V6). The V6's supercharger produces a distinctive high-pitched note under hard acceleration. Some customers love it; some find it unusual. It is worth hearing in person rather than making assumptions based on recordings.
  • Brake pedal feel. The brakes are powerful and the pedal is direct. On a first drive, allow time to calibrate your foot pressure - the Emira stops far harder than most cars at this price point, and confidence with the brakes significantly changes how much you can explore the engine.

Lotus Test Drive Route

Why Our Location Makes a Difference

Woodcote & Copse is based at Silverstone - the home of British motorsport and one of the most significant circuits in Formula 1 history. For a Lotus test drive, that context is not incidental. Lotus's competition history is woven into the circuit itself: from Jim Clark's dominance in the 1960s to Ayrton Senna's years in the black and gold, Silverstone has been where Lotus engineering proved itself under pressure.

Our test route - agreed with customers in advance - is designed to give the Emira room to perform properly, rather than routing entirely through town centres and roundabouts. Please discuss the route with our team when booking; we tailor it based on what you want to understand about the car.

Finance Options for the Lotus Emira

The Lotus Emira is available on Lotus Financial Services products including PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) and HP (Hire Purchase). Representative finance examples are available on our website and are kept current - we would encourage reviewing these before your appointment so the conversation can focus on your specific situation rather than introductory figures.

Part-exchange is accepted and can be valued ahead of your visit. If you are coming from a Porsche, BMW M car, or another performance vehicle, our team can provide a valuation reference point when you enquire.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Emira enters at a similar price point to the mid-range Cayman S and offers comparable performance with a notably more distinct character. Where the Porsche has the advantage in residual values and brand familiarity, the Emira offers Lotus's engineering pedigree, greater exclusivity, and - in V6 manual form - a level of analogue driving involvement that is difficult to match at the price. The answer depends significantly on what the buyer prioritises.

Build slot and delivery timescales vary by specification and change as production capacity develops. Contact Woodcote & Copse directly for current lead times on the configuration you are considering - we are able to advise on both new orders and any pre-registered or demonstrator availability that may offer a shorter wait.

Yes. Woodcote & Copse accepts part-exchanges across all makes and models. A valuation can be provided ahead of your test drive appointment, which makes the finance conversation more straightforward from the outset.

It can be used daily, but it demands accommodation from its driver. The ride in Comfort mode is manageable on most UK roads; the rear-mounted storage and low seating position require adjustment if replacing a family hatchback or SUV. Many Emira owners run it alongside a second car rather than as a sole vehicle.

Book Your Test Drive at Woodcote & Copse

Booking in advance is recommended - demonstrator availability for the Emira is managed carefully to ensure each customer has dedicated time with the car. When you enquire, let us know which engine variant you are most interested in and whether a part-exchange valuation would be useful ahead of the appointment.

WOODCOTE AND COPSE LIMITED is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows WOODCOTE AND COPSE LIMITED to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a lender on our panel, which includes lenders of vehicle manufacturers. We have commercial arrangements with lenders and credit brokers which are likely to influence who we introduce you to. We are not an independent financial adviser and don’t give you any advice or recommendations. It is your choice whether you enter into any finance agreement.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked to the franchise offering you the vehicle. They will usually offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions (but we do not guarantee they do). If they are unable to offer finance, we then seek to introduce you to someone else on our panel. We will usually receive a commission for your introduction. This will be either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you choose.

Lenders of vehicle manufacturers may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will tell you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receiving this commission. The exact amount of commission will be confirmed before you sign your finance agreement.
